The Bar at Moniker General

is an approachable, yet classy experience offered to the public. Ambient enough to host a date, casual enough to hang out with friends and relaxing enough to engage in work or projects utilizing our wifi. There is plenty of room to gather with friends and do what we encourage best; create and cultivate community.

Our bartenders are knowledgeable and experienced in offering a wide range of cocktails - from classics to contemporary. They are happy to create something unique to your own liking or sit and talk about history, details, and specs of the high end liquor we are offering.  Some of our specialties and most ordered cocktails range from our unique and freshly made Espresso Martinis to classic Whiskey Sours with our own little twist on it.

There is a cocktail for everyone regardless of base preference; tequila, vodka, rum or whiskey.  We host Live Music Friday and Saturday Nights. If you are in the Industry please let us know and ask about our Industry special!

 

MEET THE TEAM

director of food & beverage - Matt

Matt is a San Diego native and began working in hospitality at a young age. He first started as a busser and dishwasher for a local Italian restaurant in his neighborhood. After years of working his way up he was fortunate to be apprenticed by Bek Allen who reigned from New Yorkโ€™s Pegu Club. He soaked up as much knowledge as possible and eat, breathed and slept the bar life. He quickly moved up to lead bartender at a swanky joint downtown called Chaplos. He eventually landed a spot as Lead Bartender at the much anticipated Patio on Goldfinch. Here he worked under local certified Tequila Catador Chris Simmons. He joined the United States Bartenders Guild and competed in several cocktail competitions. He eventually went on to help open a new restaurant in Rancho Santa Fe for 5th Generation French Master Chef Patrick Ponsaty. Here he managed the bar and booked the music. He consulted a few bars before stepping into a brief stint doing on premise liquor sales throughout San Diego. This deepened his knowledge and got him cicerone and W-Set certified. He always loved the story, creativity and aesthetics of Moniker General and when the opportunity arose he quickly joined the team.

 
 

Lead Bartender - Nick

Nick hails from Sacramento and got his start at Cask & Barrel. He was hired as a bartender and along the way fell in love with whisky. He quickly moved up to General Manager due to his innate skills in customer service and profound knowledge for whisky. He moved to San Diego in 2012 and began working in Rancho Santa Fe around 2016 for 5th Generation French Master Chef Patrick Ponsaty. This is where he met Matt, who was running the bar at the time and they built a solid bar program. Nick eventually went on to help open Huntress in downtown San Diego before rejoining Matt at The Bar at Moniker General. If you have any questions pertaining to whisky..specifically, Japanese whisky; this is your guy.
